FACTS ABOUT THE LASH SHEDDING CYCLE

October 6, 2018

Just like the hair on our head goes through shedding cycles, so do our lashes. And the lash shedding cycle continues when you have lash extensions. So why does this happen and how it effects lash extensions?

-Natural eyelashes grow in and fall out in cycles, which occurs every 60 to 90 days.

-Every hair on our body follows a specific growth cycle, including our eyelashes. This is a three-phase growth cycle.

-All hairs, including eyelashes, replace themselves every few years.

-The average person loses up to 20% of their natural lashes every two weeks and new hair growth is constant.

-Ever noticed how it seems like your hair sheds more during certain seasons? The same is true for your lashes. This is called ‘seasonal molting’.

-When a natural lash matures and falls out, a new lash has already been growing and quickly replaces the fallen lash. Most of us do not notice this process.

-At any given moment our natural lashes are at different stages of maturity. Some are just starting to grow in, while others are ready to shed.

-People typically shed between 1 and 5 natural lashes each day, depending on their individual growth cycles.

-When eyelashes are extended with quality extensions it will be more noticeable when these lashes shed because they are longer and darker than your natural lashes. With or without extensions, the shedding process is perfectly normal.

-The shedding cycle is a healthy part of the hair growth process and should not be cause for alarm.

-When a trained stylist applies a set of lash extensions,  one synthetic lash is attached to one natural lash.  You will notice that when your natural lash sheds – so goes the lash extension.

-If a lash hair is plucked or pulled out before it is naturally ready to shed, it will take a little longer to grow back due to the hair follicle needing to run its normal course.
